Activities
What the Society does
The Society :
provides a forum for discussion of issues involving science and technology and their impact on the community.
encourages participation and membership by all with an interest in science and technology
holds monthly meetings, special symposia and workshops on scientific issues.
provides seed funding to young scientists for novel projects of relevance to Victoria.
publishes its own Proceedings and other scientific publications.
recognizes excellence by the award each year of the Society's Research Medal.
facilitates information transfer and discussion of scientific issues of relevance to the community via an electronic bulletin board and the World Wide Web .
Some important achievements
The Society has played an important part in:
forming government policy on science
surveying the natural resources of Victoria
establishing the Museum and National Parks
convening the first Australian Antarctic Exploration Committee in 1885
organising the Burke and Wills expedition, and more recently,
establishing the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences.
