What the Society does

The Society :

  • provides a forum for discussion of issues involving science and technology and their impact on the community.
  • encourages participation and membership by all with an interest in science and technology
  • holds monthly meetings, special symposia and workshops on scientific issues.
  • provides seed funding to young scientists for novel projects of relevance to Victoria.
  • publishes its own Proceedings and other scientific publications.
  • recognizes excellence by the award each year of the Society's Research Medal.
  • facilitates information transfer and discussion of scientific issues of relevance to the community via an electronic bulletin board and the World Wide Web .

    Some important achievements

    The Society has played an important part in:
  • forming government policy on science
  • surveying the natural resources of Victoria
  • establishing the Museum and National Parks
  • convening the first Australian Antarctic Exploration Committee in 1885
  • organising the Burke and Wills expedition, and more recently,
  • establishing the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences.
