TOPIC: Natural Hazards and The International Year of Planet Earth
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2008 to be the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). 'Hazards – minimising risk, maximising awareness' is one of ten broad themes that make up the Science programme of IYPE. The theme focuses on key research questions such as the role of humankind in increasing geohazards, ways and means of assessing the vulnerability to geohazards of human communities, our current and future ability to monitor, predict and mitigate the impact of geohazards, and the impediments standing in the way of governments making full use of readily available scientific information in planning to reduce risk and vulnerability.
Successful research on hazards and disasters requires large-scale international co-operation. The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), was set up in 1919 with Australia as a Founding Member, is a foundation sponsor of IYPE and is working towards setting up a longer-term international research programme on disaster risk and reduction.

TOPIC: Lies, Damn Lies and Climate change Sceptics: What Has Caused Recent
Global Warming?
In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Fourth
Assessment Report, providing a comprehensive global assessment of climate change.
Two of the main conclusions are that warming of the climate system is unequivocal
over the last 100 years, and that most of the increase in global average
temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the increase in
anthropogenic greenhouse gases. However, there is still a substantial amount of
discussion and misinformation spread in opinion pieces in the media, questioning
the role of human activity in recent global warming.
