A.B.C. Science Online

Mailing Lists - The Lab hosts four science-based mailing lists. Science Updates, with details on what science coverage is coming up on the ABC. Science Matters, an open email discussion list for people interested in science. Teaching-Science, another open email discussion list for people interested in the educational side of science and teaching related issues. Experts Forum, reminded when the experts will be online with this email alert service.
You can subscribe to any or all of these lists.

Einstein International Year of Physics

World Year of Physics 2005 in Australia  ~  International Year of Physics 2005 Seed Grant Scheme   ~    The year 2005 has been declared the world-year-of-physics (WYP2005) and physics societies around the world, including the AIP, are preparing for a major program of celebration and outreach. This will commence in Australia with the 2005 AIP Congress to be held at the ANU between 31 January and 4 February, which will have the theme “Physics for the Nation”
.

World Year of Physics 2005  Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's "Miraculous Year," the events of the World Year of Physics 2005 aim to raise the worldwide public awareness for physics and more generally for physical sciences.

Science and the making of Victoria

"SCIENCE- UPDATES" is a weekly email alert about upcoming coverage of science on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's radio, television and internet services. Find out how to subscribe here.

AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS  -  The Australian Science Communicators (ASC) is a national association of more than 400 journalists, editors, scientists, engineers, educators and communicators committed to the communication of science and technology.

TREASURE TROVES OF SCIENCE
This is an interesting site for all science lovers, giving lots of information on Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy and Mathematics. While there is a lot of material already on the site, particularly in the area of Mathematics the site is in an ongoing state of construction, so if there are any budding scientists out there who would enjoy adding to the bank of knowledge you would be welcome. Here is a site you can learn from and contribute to too. This sort of exchange of knowledge I think is super and I must admit I was amazed when I first heard that the Oxford Dictionary was solely composed by word contributions. So here is your chance to be a science writer.

WinStars v1.030   -   WinStars is a complete planetarium. You may view the night sky as it is now, or as it was or will be on any date, from any place on earth. There are 10,000 stars in the basic version and more than 2,500,000 stars by downloading Sky2000 and Tycho2 catalogues, both available on the Web site. View more than 10,000 deep sky objects - star clusters, nebulae, galaxies - SAC catalogue, smooth real time navigation with the mouse, displays the accurate position of the Sun, the Moon, the major planets, comets and asteroids, position of the major planetary satellites can be displayed on the map, realistic views of the planets, the Moon, the phases of Mercury and Venus, the horizon and objects of deep sky, calculations of ephemeris and detailed information may be displayed about each object, 3.03MB. Windows XP/Me/NT4/2000/98/95.  Free.

Think Quest Library   -   Contains unique educational web sites created through ThinkQuest competitions and programs. The library currently contains more than 5,000 web sites. Built by students for students to use and learn. It is also a great place to get ideas for projects.

Orrery Maker

3 Dimensional models of the solar system using simple clock work gearing appeared early in the history and cosmology of astronomy. Gearing for the stars lead to a clockwork heaven where mechanical models defined the planetary orbits and periods of the wanderers {planets}. Finally leading to modern Planetariums around the world like DIGISTAR. The orrerymaker catalogue contains the greatest range of these models in the known cosmos.

National Geographic
Sometimes, rarely, an organization arises of such excellence that it's efforts enhance the lives of thousands for generations. The National Geographic Society is just such an organization, and both the magazine and the Web site are the tip of an iceberg of contributions to exploration and discovery. The Web site is full of interesting articles and photographs - always a pleasure to visit.

Red Gold
A companion Web site to the new four-part PBS mini series RED GOLD: THE EPIC STORY OF BLOOD looks at the facts and myths about blood and its impact on everything from religion and medicine to commerce and popular culture throughout history.

Scientific and Technical Resources
Here's a valuable site a-building. The object is to provide the scientist, engineer, and science aware citizen with easy access to US government resources. Of all the multitude of uses found for the Internet the storage of and rapid access to information must rank as one of the most important.

Sky and Telescope
The Web version of Sky and Telescope, the popular astronomy magazine, jam-packed with information and news on the night sky.

Space Weather
If we think the planet earth has some hair-raising weather, we should try it out in space, where we'd find solar wind, meteors, asteroids, comets and their tails, and frequent electro-magnetic disturbance. Right now there's a flurry of sunspot activity that could play havoc with our radio communications. Did you hear of the asteroid that passed too close for comfort a few weeks ago? Well, there are 370 known PHAs - that's a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid - and you may read all about them on this splendid site.

Stephen Hawking's Universe
The PBS television series "Stephen Hawking's Universe" began on October 13th. 1999, and ended on November 17th.. Fortunately for posterity, this brilliant series is preserved on a Web site in text and image form, and available for personal or educational use on videotapes. Stephen Hawking is one of the leading cosmologists of our time, and he has the gift of explaining in fairly simple terms a highly mathematical subject. Available for download from this Web site, in PDF format, is a wonderful teachers' guide, with structured lessons rich in practical experiments, that should keep a class of High School students spellbound for the duration of the course. Any one who is at all interested in the creation and evolution of the Universe should visit this site, and teachers of Science should consider it mandatory.

The Elegant Universe
View this TV program online. One of the most ambitious and exciting theories ever proposed. This one that may be the long-sought theory of everything, which eluded even Einstein. It gets a masterful, lavishly computer-animated explanation from bestselling author-physicist Brian Greene, when NOVA presents a three-part series on the nuts, bolts, and sometimes outright nuttiness of string theory. Downloads not available due to rights issues. Free viewing via the site.
